Chief Information Officer

Job Description:
The CIO is responsible for strategic planning, development, execution and implementation related to the company's Information Technology Services. They work with the IT team to devise the strategic direction and they are responsible for budget expenditures and staff oversight of the IT Services department. CIOs plan, organize and lead the IT department to meet company standards and strategic goals and ensure consistency with the company's mission statement.

CIOs utilize their knowledge of information technologies, techniques and best practices to help position the company for the future. They maintain and develop a competent, productive and quality-conscious work force. They also develop and implement processes through orientation, training and education to ensure that the competency of all staff members are assessed, maintained, improved, and demonstrated throughout their employment.

They will prepare and control operating budgets and department resources by forecasting future IT funding needs of the organization, as well as act as a consultant for the organization for initiatives related to IT development and implementation.

IT career goal-setters looking to become a CIO or CTO must demonstrate superior negotiation and leadership skills, information technology expertise and knowledge. They also must have a strong commitment to customer service, including a proactive consultative style. Understanding the connection between electronic communications and the network in an organization's overall information and communications strategy is also essential.

They need the ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of people toward the accomplishment of work and organizational goals with experience in selection, evaluation, and direction of subordinates. The also must work and relate well to all levels of associates, internal and external customers, operations managers and the general public.
