As computers continue to become more central to business functions, more sophisticated and complex technology is being implemented across all organizations, fueling demand for Database Programmers. There is growing demand for Database Developers and Database Administrators to help firms maximize their efficiency with available database administration technology. Expansion of electronic commerce—doing business on the Internet—and the continuing need to build and maintain databases that store critical information on customers, inventory, and projects are fueling demand for Database Administrators familiar with the latest database technology. Because of the increasing reliance on the Internet among businesses, information security is an increasing concern.

When starting your career in Database Administration, there are essentially three levels of career advancement: Level 1- Data Analyst or Data Technician. Level 2 of your Database Administration career will require at least one to two years of experience in database design, whereby you can advance to: Database Administrator or SQL Programmer. Level 3- Database Manager or Enterprise Architect; requiring three+ years of experience - and this is only a portion of what your IT career could consist of. Database Administrators work with database management systems software and determine ways to organize and store data. They set up computer databases and test and coordinate changes to them. Since they also may design implementation and system security, Database Administrators often plan and coordinate security measures.
